602 I bought this volume hoping to be able to pass it on to a few atheist friends of mine. These friends are the kind who would look up the sources of Simmons’ quotations to check the context. They would be disappointed.Blaise Pascal, C. S. Lewis, St. Augustine, Napoleon, and Darwin for example are all quoted to good effect, but quoted from secondary sources. The secondary sources are themselves—like the present volume—popular rather than academic, and thus all footnotes are ultimately dead ends.Pascal is actually a Kreft source (243); C. S. Lewis from Dallas Willard (234); St. Augustine from Philip Yancey; Charles Darwin from Warren Buffet (144); Thomas Arnold from Josh McDowell; Francis Crick and Eugene Wigner from Nancy Pearcey (258, 181). One gets the feeling that we are reading Simmons’ note cards.One might be better served by reading Willard and Yancey and Pearcey directly.Internet searches can help alleviate the pain. An index would help, or at least a name index. Better yet would be if the author acquired an ISBN for the book, to take advantage of Amazon.com’s free Look Inside the Book service.There are direct quotations without footnote, like Albert Einstein (149) and Arnold Toynbee (237). There are countless missing or misplaced quotation marks and improper indentation of long quotations. I did a lot of backtracking in my reading to get the meaning.
