I really liked book one, and I liked book two enough to read it as KU and but it. But there were issues.Good1: The characters are true to book one. If you liked them in book one, you’ll like them here.2: The hot bits are hot. There is a strong same same with many of these interactions. I liked the thief’s growth in this area as you could easily tell it was her scene. I’d prefer the otters to be more individualized with there own preferences or kinks.3: Doesn’t end a cliffhanger.4: Smooth writing. You won’t find any info dumps, long passages going into a strange divergent, or excessive dialogue. It reads easy with only the occasional typo.5: I appreciated that there were parts where the main character was only with on partner in a date like atmosphere. It helped immensely with fleshing out the different woman.6: Loved the main characters power arc. The temple, paladin, worship, and everything on that plane was fantastic. The overall character arc was really my favorite part.Bad1: In the beginning they come up with a plan, a set level they need to get and solid reason why going off without the power will end in them dead. Then… they leave the dungeon 3 to 8 levels lower than that cap. It seemed the author just got tired of the dungeon and decided to jump the gun. I think this was meant to be two books. One to finish the dungeon and one to get revenge, unfortunately they slammed them together disfiguring both.2: The town is hardly fleshed out. Several plans to level up are discarded, from using the arena to using factions. These are all shuffled off, and the plot set to fast forward, prominent places in town are not fleshed out, the town feels paper thin and doesn’t feel as interesting as it should.3: The main character gets a chance to break the ceiling if 30 points for a skill or ability. This is a divine bonus that breaks the rules of the world. Instead of going big, he barely puts his toe in. While I understand the author doesn’t want to OP the character, I felt this was a missed chance and my respect for the main character was diminished.4: The big bad…. I hate these all powerful baddies that make the character do this or go there. When you give the agency of the plot to a big bad, you effectively make it the new main character. It decides what will happen, it decides where the party goes, it decides what the priorities are. The main character becomes nothing but an errand boy, he no longer makes his own choices, the big bad does. He no longer decides what he wants, the big bad does. It’s a horrible device that castrates the character.I enjoyed this book…. But it felt like two books slammed together. I would if rather the author taken his time and fleshed out the world and characters. Let the character decide his own path. Let him decide to make an empire or become a god. Let him decide on what the next adventure will be. Don’t turn your character into a bitch. This book is very much not your typical harem book. The main character is a human turned demon and more and more he is starting to act demonic. More and more the main character Jace is acting like a demon making the darker choices for more experience rather than helping people. I love it. In one instance Jace and Selene were tasked with killing a brood of monsters instead they choose to breed a whole new much more terrifying race of monster. Jace isn't afraid of using slaves to die for him either. However when he was presented with a choice to kill children for more experience he wouldn't allow it showing there is still some human in him. So it's nice to see a main character that actually has depth and isn't just one note. Finally the end of this book gave us the resolution to the ending from the first book and again the author surprised me. Going in I expected some terrible cookie cutter plot point something along the lines of I still love you but had to betray you because father was holding my siblings/Kingdom/Dog hostage for this mcguffin/castle I had to give him but you still love me so we'll fight him together after you rescue me. But no the meeting between Jace and Elisa went much differently and made this a better story overall. Also this book didn't end on an out of nowhere cliffhanger so that was a huge plus as well.
